The citadel of Machu Picchu was built in the 15th century connecting the citadel with the outside world through a network of roads built at the same time.

These roads served as communication and trade systems .

The Inka Trail is an extensive Inca road system, which integrated the Tawantinsuyo empire, covering Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, reaching central Chile and northern Argentina.
